Pride and Planned Parenthood
sherlock john amused
gemini_melia
(for anyone who reads this blog for the fic, keep your eyes open for some Sherlock stuff in the near future) For now, though, here's what I've been thinking about lately:

On Saturday I went to my first ever Pride festival in Harrisburg. Really, it was my first ever Pride event, which in retrospect seems odd because I spend the majority of my time in Ithaca, NY - considered one of the most LGBTQ-friendly campuses in the country. I have plenty of gay friends and am active in slash fandom so being open to all sexualities and lifestyles is not new for me. But actually participating at Pride, and more specifically tabling for Planned Parenthood, I felt a little niggling sense of purpose and belonging. I've always been a feminist, if a rather quiet one, but I felt that this was something I couldn't stay quiet about.

After living in NY state for school for the past three years, I've failed to keep myself updated on my own home-state, Pennsylvania, and living at school can be a lovely little ball of current event ignorance half the time. Though I'm not what I would call a very political person, I have very strong opinions about equal social rights for everyone and one of the biggest misconceptions I've come across lately is that of Planned Parenthood's purpose. Abortion is such a touchy subject, even if you're not a hardcore conservative, but one thing that shouldn't be so controversial is the availability of health care. I read an article in the New York Times yesterday (http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/28/treating-the-cause-not-the-illness/) about doctors in big cities handing out "prescriptions" for things like food, safe housing and heating - basic necessities for human survival.

What's a shame though, is that sexual health never gets considered among these basics because America feels the need to place such a horrible stigma on the very notion of sex. Rather than educating people on how to protect themselves when they have sex - because they're going to do it, even if Michelle Bachmann is giving them the shaming death glare (or perhaps in spite of it) - this country thinks that abstinence and simply closing one's eyes to the act will make it all go away. Planned Parenthood, on the other hand, has its eyes wide open - to everything. They're not just an abortion clinic because there are plenty of other side effects of sex than just getting pregnant.

Perhaps Planned Parenthood isn't the best name for it anymore, but regardless of what its' called, it needs a place in our country - in our states. Cutting off funding will not make STIs disappear (if only) and it will certainly not end teen pregnancy. I stand with Planned Parenthood because my eyes are wide open to reality. I've had enough with ignorance and stigma and even if I don't spend much time in PA anymore, it is my home and I'll fight for the rights of its citizens.

"I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes..."

I've pretty much just had the best Friday night ever. In case anyone's interested in some RL Christmasy shenanigans, here's the video my roommates and I made for our absent roomie who just turned 21 and is far away from us, in Germany for the semester. We're pretty pleased with ourselves. And if anyone's wondering, the song is "Get Behind Me, Santa!" by Sufjan Stevens. And that's me with the pink bangs and the horribly bad dancing/flashing XD

Deathly Hallows

Okay, so I've hardly been able to contain myself about Deathly Hallows, so SPOILERS AHEAD (though mild ones I'd say).

Time for a random RL post because I'm in the mood.

I woke up in a ridiculously good mood today - and it's really a mystery as to why. All I can say is a good night's sleep must have had something to do with it. The semester is in this strange place right now where it's beginning to wind down, but there are still big projects looming that need to be done and I'm left feeling strangely idle. I've watched way too many movies on weekday afternoons while doing homework to feel very productive (I watched Australia in it's entirety the other day, I mean c'mon!). Today was the last day of readings for my sociology class and that made me think O.O wow.

On another surprising note, I have starting thinking seriously about going to grad school for an MFA in fiction after I graduate. Probably take a year or so off, but after talking to my advisor, who told me "I have the stuff" to write fiction, I felt much more confident in myself than usual. Huzzah! And naturally that gives me the excuse to plan and research schools, something I don't really need an excuse to do anyway because I think it's fun.

The high note of the day fizzled a bit as I hit a lull at work - only one student conference at the writing center, and I was feeling a bit bored and restless to start my weekend. I had brought Deathly Hallows with me, so I was able to do some reading - I'll never finish it in time for the midnight showing(I'm around ch. 20), but it's fun to try!

Then tonight I watched Anchorman and A Very Potter Musical with the roomies. Oh how they are both hilarious. AVPM is a tad long and could have been tightened up in places, but seriously it is such an amazing piece of fanwork that I'm not going to complain. The rest of the weekend will be writing some flashfiction for class and prepping for a group project - maybe some laundry thrown in to spice things up? WIshful thinking. I'll be watching A Very Potter Sequel and probably some of the ABC Family HP marathon to pregame for Thursday night. Woot.

If I can get through the week, then it's home to PA for Thanksgiving break (holy shit, how time flies!) Black Friday shopping and some much needing hanging with the bffs who I haven't seen since August.

Finally got my halloween pic up! I swore there was one with just me and Watson, but it has yet to be found. Anyhoo, from left to right we have Snookie, Dr. Watson, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Drag Queen Daisy Duke, and Holmes (me!). It's not RDJ!Holmesian at all, but we still had fun with it XD

fandom appreciation - snarry my love
sherlock john amused

Haven't posted in a while, and - though it is a fandom post - it's not KKBB. It's my original love that still has a special place near and dear to my heart: Harry Potter...and more specifically the Snarry ship.

Every once in a while I'll go back and read some classic Snarry for some comfort reading. Last month it was Snape the Home Fries Nazi - a great post-war classic. Then I wandered onto Commonplace Magic by sinick and acid a lovely nonmagic-AU spin-off to their opus, Price of Magic, which I just finished for the first time after starting it years ago. The Price of Magic is the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful love story I've ever read in fandom and better than most published works too.

Damn it's been a teary night. I was practically bawling as I finished this fic and that's after I watched Toy Story 3 for the second time.

Oh, but I do have some randomly RDJ related news. For Halloween my roommate and I are dressing as female, steampunk Holmes and Watson - I'll be Holmes, she'll be Watson, so expect pics soon!
